Recently we have experienced an increase in diesel and oil thefts across
Cambridgeshire. Investigations are ongoing and we have already had some
successful results, in early August our force helicopter located four
men who were arrested on suspicion of theft of diesel.
We wanted to give you some crime prevention advice about how to prevent
you from becoming a victim of oil theft.
We have noticed an increase in this type of crime whenever the price of
crude oil rises. A rise in the price of fuel at the petrol pump
inevitably leads to a rise in the cost of heating oil. This makes oil a
more attractive proposition for thieves who are targeting fuel tanks at
farms, transport depots and domestic properties. The thieves may be
using the oil for their own central heating or selling it on at a
handsome profit. Tanks can contain many thousands of pounds worth of oil
and it therefore makes good sense to take a few precautions to protect
them. The purpose of this information is to illustrate ways in which we
can make it more difficult for a thief to steal heating oil. Nothing
mentioned will make it impossible for a really determined thief to
achieve their goal, but if some of the suggestions made are followed it
just may make a difference.
For more information about how to prevent yourself becoming a victim,
visit our website at www.cambs.police.uk where you can find out how to
secure your oil tank, make it more difficult to access with defensive
plants, use of CCTV and much more.
It is important to report any loss of fuel to the police or any attempt
to steal. If you would like further information please contact us on
0345 456 456 4.
Your neighbourhood policing team.
Your
Neighbourhood Policing Team has taken the following action on the agreed
priorities.
Priority one - anti-social behaviour (ASB) in Bath Road and the High
Street.
Police attended the area following reports of a mini motor bike riding
around. Enquiries were made and a youth spoken to and advice given.
The damage done to the newly seeded area at the skate park by youths
riding bikes through it was repaired by the two youths responsible after
the involvement of PC Oldfield.
A quad bike was seen in the High Street by officers at the weekend. The
driver was spoken to and all legal requirements for the vehicle were
met. It is not required but is advisable that a safety helmet be worn.

The police in conjunction with Peterborough City Council Road Safety
Team will be running a road safety campaign during September.

Web Safety
We seem to be receiving more and more problems in
relation to threats or bullying on the internet between youngsters at
school. I have looked into this area and have found that many
youngsters are indeed using sites that are not age appropriate.
These include Facebook, Bebo, Myspace. To
be given a profile on such sites, children are required to lie about
their age as the minimum age to access these accounts is 13 or 14 for Myspace.
In some cases youngsters are giving full names, mobile numbers, email
addresses and indeed adding photos to their profiles. It is obviously
concerning that children are putting themselves in a vulnerable
position.
Please do be vigilant and help us by adhering to internet safety. If
you would like any assistance in this matter please do let us know.
